Please SIGN: People and nature in eastern Congo need peace!

Dear friends of the rainforests,

Today we have a special request on behalf of our Congolese partner Jean François Mombia Atuku of the organization RIAO-RDC:

The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been in turmoil for the past 30 years. Militias roam the countryside, filling the power vacuum left by the weak DRC state. The violence not only means misery for local people, but also threatens unique and irreplaceable natural treasures – such as the gorillas in Virunga National Park.

Jean François understands the power of solidarity. Working under challenging and dangerous conditions, he is organizing peace marches and asked us to launch a petition. He believes that signatures from tens of thousands of people from all over world will add weight to the marches and be a first step toward guaranteeing human rights and protecting nature against exploitation.

Tanzania: Government backs down after Maasai protests

Tanzania’s government recently attempted to strip over 100,000 Maasai living near the Ngorongoro Crater of their right to vote, a move widely seen as a strategy to force them from their ancestral lands. After widespread protests, the government swiftly reversed its plans. Reports suggest that schools and health services, which had been neglected, are now slated for restoration.
